How is it calculated?

We count the number of 24-hour calendar periods between the start date and the end date. The result is the civil-day difference, not elapsed hours, so a DST change does not add or drop a day.

About counting days between two dates

Hotels, visa rules, and “net 30” invoices disagree about whether both endpoints count. This calculator reports the signed difference in calendar days using UTC midnights so a trip that crosses a local DST change still counts as civil days, not elapsed hours. 1 January to 31 January is 30 days (the span) and 31 dates if you include both ends. Same-day start and end is 0 days and 1 inclusive date.

A negative result means the end date is earlier than the start. That is useful when you typed the fields in the wrong order; swap them or read the absolute value. Inclusive count is always |days| + 1, which matches “how many calendar dates does this stay cover?” rather than “how many midnights pass?”

This is not a working-day count. Weekends and holidays still increment the total. For Monday–Friday with optional holiday exclusions, use Working Days Calculator. Age in years/months/days is a different question — use Age Calculator. All math stays in the browser.

How to count days between dates

Enter start and end

Pick the start and end dates. Use Swap if you typed them in the wrong order. A backward span still counts the same number of civil days.

Choose whether the start and end dates count

Leave Include start date on for the usual end-minus-start span. Turn on Include end date to add the last calendar date (1 January to 31 January becomes 31).

Read days, hours, and the summary

The result card shows whole days plus hours, minutes, and seconds. Copy or download the breakdown.

Days Between Dates FAQ

The large number is the signed difference between UTC midnights: how many day boundaries you cross, not how many calendar dates sit in the range. Inclusive count (both endpoints) is |days| + 1, so that same January span is 31 dates. Same-day start and end is 0 days and 1 inclusive date. A negative result means the end date is earlier than the start.

Yes. This is a civil-day count, so Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays increment the total. DST does not change the day count because we compare UTC midnights. For weekdays with optional holiday exclusions, use Working Days Calculator instead of subtracting 2/7 by hand.

No. The two dates are compared locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
